Is it just a trend? A shiny new buzzword in the world of management and psychology? No. It\u2019s a necessary transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Authentic leadership doesn\u2019t stem from a title, a role, or a hierarchical position. It starts from within. From knowing yourself\u2014your strengths, but also your shadows. From daring to grow and putting your talents in service of others. It\u2019s the kind of purpose-driven leadership that inspires, mobilizes, and builds genuine trust.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Is Authentic Leadership?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Authentic leadership is a way of leading based on personal integrity, alignment between values and actions, and a deep commitment to developing others. It\u2019s not about seeming perfect\u2014it\u2019s about being real. And that authenticity, far from being a weakness, is a powerful source of vulnerability and positive influence.<\/p>\n<p>Over more than 20 years of research and work with leaders in a variety of organizations, I\u2019ve identified three key dimensions that define the authentic leadership model, which I present in my book <em>Yours Truly: Staying Authentic in Leadership and Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.margaritamayo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-3H-Model-of-Authentic-Leadership.jpg\" alt=\"The 3H Model of Authentic Leadership\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.margaritamayo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-3H-Model-of-Authentic-Leadership.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.margaritamayo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-3H-Model-of-Authentic-Leadership-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.margaritamayo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-3H-Model-of-Authentic-Leadership-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.margaritamayo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-3H-Model-of-Authentic-Leadership-670x335.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>The 3H Model of Authentic Leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This humanistic and transformational model is built around three core pillars I call the 3H of Authentic Leadership:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heart: Inspiration <\/strong><br \/>Authentic leaders lead from the heart. They connect through empathy, passion, and emotional energy. They inspire others because they first inspire themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Habit: Innovation <\/strong><br \/>There is no leadership without learning. Authentic leaders make personal growth a daily habit. They embrace a growth mindset and nurture routines that keep them evolving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harmony: Inclusion <\/strong><br \/>True leaders create safe, collaborative, and diverse spaces. They champion equity, inclusion, and belonging. These are observable behaviors that anyone can intentionally develop with practice and commitment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Passion<\/strong><br \/>Authentic leaders do what they love\u2014and it shows. They radiate energy, spark motivation, and operate in a state of flow. Passion is contagious and uplifting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Humility<\/strong><br \/>They know they don\u2019t have all the answers. They listen, ask, learn. Humility enables them to harness collective intelligence and make better decisions. It\u2019s not false modesty\u2014it\u2019s grounded courage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purposeful Storytelling<\/strong><br \/>They have a coherent life narrative. They understand their roots, know their values, and can clearly articulate why they do what they do. They lead with meaning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Growth Mindset<\/strong><br \/>Authenticity isn\u2019t about staying the same\u2014it\u2019s about continuous growth. They set ambitious goals, tolerate discomfort, and delay gratification in pursuit of long-term excellence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Openness to Feedback<\/strong><br \/>They recognize the limits of self-awareness. They actively seek feedback and use it as a tool for development. Feedback is not criticism\u2014it\u2019s a path to growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resilience<\/strong><br \/>In uncertain environments, failure is part of the journey. Resilience allows them to learn from mistakes, adapt to change, and emerge stronger. Fall. Learn. Move forward.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coaching and Talent Development<\/strong><br \/>They focus not only on themselves, but on others. They act as coaches, spotting potential and helping people flourish. They build leaders, not followers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Building<\/strong><br \/>They don\u2019t lead to impose and control\u2014they lead to connect. They foster cultures where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels they belong. Inclusion isn\u2019t optional\u2014it\u2019s essential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy<\/strong><br \/>Authentic leaders think beyond the present. Their vision is generative\u2014they plant trees whose shade they may never sit under. We\u2019ve never needed leadership more yet trust in leaders is at an all-time low. Recent studies show that nearly 50% of people do not trust the leaders in their companies, institutions, or governments.<\/p>\n<p>This trust crisis demands a clear response: a return to authentic leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Authentic leadership doesn\u2019t just boost performance\u2014it elevates human well-being. From my stay at the Paso Alto military residence\u2014a residential space with pool, family places, and social activities\u2014it was clear: leadership is about people and care.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Talk at La Hoya: 150 Officers in Uniform<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The next day, I gave a keynote on authentic leadership to 150 army officers. Nervousness, emotion, a full auditorium, and some rebellious tech that eventually cooperated. We discussed vulnerability, Shakespeare\u2019s <em>Henry V speech<\/em>, and the power of authenticity in high-stakes roles.<\/p>\n<p>The questions that followed were profound:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What happens when we lead with too much heart?<\/li>\n<li>Where\u2019s the line between empathy and emotional burnout?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These were not theoretical. And now that it\u2019s open, it can\u2019t be closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion: A Revolution That Starts With You<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Authentic leadership is not reserved for a few. It\u2019s a daily practice. A conscious decision to live and lead with integrity, passion, and purpose.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about being perfect but being consistent. Not about leading through authority, but through truth. Not about impressing but about creating real impact.<\/p>\n<p>If we want more humane organizations, happier teams, and a more hopeful future, we need more authentic leaders. And that begins with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will forget what you said, forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.\u201d \u2013 Maya Angelou<\/p>\n<p>That is the legacy of authentic leadership.
